This year has seen the formation of a Management Committee to both set and deliver the aims of the Cornish Chamber of Mines and Minerals (CCMM). In keeping with the original Council members of the Chamber in 1917, the Management Committee comprises mineral exploration and development companies, as well as mineral owners.

Members of the CCMM Management Committee include Imerys and Imerys British Lithium, Cornish Metals, Cornish Tin, Cornwall Resources, Cornish Lithium, the Tregothnan Estate, West Country Minerals and The Duchy of Cornwall. Many of these represent the same mineral interests as the founding members of the CCMM over 100 years ago, showing that despite the changing times, a secure supply of Cornish minerals is still achievable, but continues to face practical and political challenges.

The original ‘Objects’ of the Cornish Chamber of Mines remain relevant today, to:

Advance, promote, encourage and protect the mining interests of Cornwall and Devon

Circulate and publish information to members on all matters affecting mining interests

To promote or oppose any legislative measures directly or indirectly affecting these interests

The Committee has established a working group to focus on an updated evidence base for the next Mineral Safeguarding Plan, as well as an approach to responding to planning applications which may conflict with the ability to access minerals to meet the needs of future generations. The Management Committee intends to meet quarterly to tackle other key issues for the sector and to advance best practice and sustainable development principles.

The CCMM is pleased that Cornwall Council Mineral Planning Authority continues to engage in a positive way, and to attend Chamber meetings where considered helpful.
