The CCMM is pleased to have been given the opportunity to convene the meetings of a Biodiversity Working Group, comprising mineral exploration companies, ecological and environmental consultants, academics, representatives from Cornwall Council and members of affiliated industry bodies, like the Mineral Products Association.
The Group will act as a forum for these parties to work together on biodiversity issues linked to mineral development in Cornwall and Devon. Its initial focus will be on making Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) workable and beneficial for the sector, while also identifying wider opportunities to deliver positive outcomes for nature.
The Biodiversity Working Group meeting held today was Chaired by Natasha Collings-Costello of Cornwall Environmental Consultants and Cornwall Wildlife Trust. Members provided updates on their activities and it was agreed that the scope of the Group could be wide-ranging to reflect the areas of interests raised, including:
- Support members to understand & implement BNG requirements for mineral projects
- Develop practical, proportionate approaches to BNG that reflect mineral site lifecycles, phased working & restoration
- Share & adapt good practice from the UK & global extractive sector
- Promote nature‑positive outcomes from mining & quarrying, including enhancement of ecological networks and restored landscapes
- Provide a coordinated industry voice into relevant guidance, policies & consultations
The CCMM is also forging links with the Critical Minerals Challenge Centre, a UKRI-funded initiative by the University of Exeter to advance responsible production of critical minerals. We hope that the CCMM Biodiversity Working Group can collaborate with the Challenge Centre on research to further characterise the unique habitats at different mineral sites and how they might be best managed and recreated.
